Kylea Taylor, M.S., MFT (MFT# 34901) is a California licensed marriage and family counselor in private practice in Santa Cruz, CA. She is particularly interested in helping clients integrate the effects of rapid spiritual development catalyzed by non-ordinary states of consciousness, including the transformational effects of meditation and spiritual practice, breathwork, spontaneous openings, grief, depression, post-traumatic stress, dissociation, substance use and addiction, and energy release phenomena.
Supervision of therapists and caregivers
Kylea has often found herself in the role of a "therapist's therapist" and also does both in-person and telephone supervision for therapists wanting to explore the interplay of client issues regarding ethics in non-ordinary states, kundalini, addiction, and trauma recovery.
Kylea says about her work with clients...
I believe that the most powerful "therapist" is the one inside each of us. My experience has shown me that in order for therapy to be successful, both the client and the professional therapist must find ways of listening to and following the unique directives of this inner healer.
After we talk about what a client wants, together we choose whichever techniques best support their needs. I have been trained in approaches from family systems therapy to depth psychology to behavioral therapy. I am comfortable with both transpersonal and cognitive-behavioral/behavioral activation models. My clients and I frequently use gestalt, process-oriented therapy techniques, and inner-child work to explore parts of themselves, and the meaning of dreams, physical symptoms, and behavioral patterns in their lives.
Kylea's training and experience
Kylea Taylor began ongoing study in 1984 with Stanislav Grof, M.D., in transpersonal psychology and non-ordinary states of consciousness. She is a certified Holotropic Breathwork™ Practitioner and was active as a senior trainer in the Grof Transpersonal Training from 1993-2000.
Grof has written about the role of a therapist:
The essential attribute of the theapist is not the knowledge of specific techniques; although these represent a necessary prerequisite, they are quite simple and can be learned in a relatively short time. The critical factors are his or her own stage of consciousness development, degree of self-knowledge, ability to participate without fear in the intense and extraordinary experiences of another person, and willingness to face new observations and situations that may not fit any conventional theoretical framework.
~Grof, S. Beyond the Brain (1985, p. 375)
Kylea has assisted Stanislav Grof at many large workshops and has facilitated workshops and presented her own work at conferences in the United States and abroad.
Kylea is currently working with Seena B. Frost to hold SoulCollage® Facilitator Trainings. Kylea is also a Prantherapist and is currently enrolled in the School for Spiritual Healers of the Federation of Damanhur in Italy.
Kylea earned her Master of Science degree from San Jose State University, San Jose, CA in Marriage, Child, and Family Counseling. She started working as a counselor in the addictions recovery field in 1970 and served as the executive director of a New Jersey community counseling center for sixteen years. Her study of Kundalini yoga in the 70's began her enduring interest in the interface between psychological, physical, social, and spiritual aspects of ourselves. She has extensive personal and professional experience with addiction, post-traumatic stress, and dissociation (including multiplicity or DID), women's issues, and spiritual emergence(y). She is the author of the books: The Ethics of Caring, The Breathwork Experience, Considering Holotropic Breathwork and The Holotropic Breathwork Facilitator's Manual and edited Exploring Holotropic Breathwork. (See links for books below.) She has also written numerous articles for print and online magazines and journals. Kylea served for 17 years on the Board of the Association for Holotropic Breathwork International and for two years as the Ethics Chair on the Board of the Santa Cruz California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT)Board.
Kylea's availability
I intentionally work with a limited number of clients, because I have writing, training, publishing, and other work I want to do also. In some respects I am very available to the clients with whom I commit to work. I have considerable flexibility in scheduling sessions and usually can do so quickly as needed, sometimes even on weekends, if necessary.
On the other hand, I do go out of town for consulting work or vacations. I am usually not gone more than two weeks at a time, but sometimes it is for longer periods. I am out of town relatively frequently. In most cases, I will be able to give clients at least one week’s notice before leaving, and, if I am unable to return calls while away, I will provide clients with the name and number of other therapists to call in the case of an emergency. Email Kylea or leave a message at 831-429-1732.
