SoulCollage and Art Therapy

By Kat Kirby

Kat Kirby, M.Ed., ATR, with Audrey Chowdhury, M.S., ATR-BC, both SoulCollage® Trainers, have provided this introduction to SoulCollage® for art therapists on CD, describing the basic structure and principles developed by Seena B. Frost and described in her book, SoulCollage® Evolving. They share stories of working with this powerful transformative process and tell how SoulCollage® has been used for decision-making, grief work, addiction recovery, eating disorders, stress and anxiety, relationship issues, “shadow” work, community-building; and with adolescents, the disabled, the elderly, and men.

SoulCollage® and Art Therapy is an excellent resource for both professional practitioners and anyone else interested in how SoulCollage®  addresses the principles of Art Therapy.  Kat is a Registered Art Therapist, SoulCollage® Facilitator and SoulCollage® Trainer who uses this process in her Art Therapy work with individuals and groups.  In this CD, Kat outlines the various aspects of the SoulCollage® process, and then goes on to share the specific applications of  SoulCollage®  in a variety of contexts or communities, including: Adolescents, People with Disabilities, the Elderly, Relationship Issues, Eating Disorders, Addictions, Decision-making, Grief Work, Stress and Anxiety, Men.

There are two outstanding elements of this CD.  The first lies in the many real-life examples and stories from Kat’s own Art Therapy practice, and also those of her collaborator Audrey Chowdhury.  Both contributors clearly ‘walk their talk’ (a rarity!).  The second outstanding element of this CD is that the writer/s and presenter clearly ‘know their stuff’ (again, not as common as one might presume!).  Kat provides clear, concise explanations of the theoretical principles and applications of SoulCollage®, cites her sources, makes explicit connections with the work of relevant theorists and demonstrates how SoulCollage®  addresses the aims of Art Therapy.  The information is presented thoroughly, but also simply – and in a manner which makes listening a pleasure. Regular readers will know that I only ‘endorse’ products which I have thoroughly researched and actually trialled – and which I use in my own professional or personal practice.  I have no hesitation in recommending the SoulCollage® and Art Therapy CD as both an excellent addition to a professional library or for personal use.  I know that I will be listening to it again and again, as I revisit specific aspects and applications of the SoulCollage® process.
